TECHNOLOGY DESCRIPTION

RI Dx Inc's point-of-care testing device based on nanoelectrode array-in-array technology developed by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, designated for measurements of concentrations of medically relevant substances in human blood. The technology is label-free electrochemical nanobiosensor comprised of an array (3x3) of carbon nanofiber's array (200x200) electrodes.

PERFORMANCE CHARACTERISTICS

Nanobiosensor has its unique qualities due to switching of diffusion mode from planar to radial which occurs when an electrode's radius reduced to nano-size. Radial diffusion provides more intensive molecules flux to an electrode which is inversely proportional to its radius. Nanoelectrodes Array (NEA) 200x200 with not overlapping diffusion layers gives amplification of single nanoelectrode signal and demonstrates the following advantages:
  • Extremely low limit of detection (LOD) in pg/mL concentration range;
  • High signal to noise ratio which is inversely proportional to electrode radius;
  • High temporal resolution which is inversely proportional to electrode radius
  • Miniaturized size of the biosensor less than 1 mm x 1 mm.
SPECIFICITY

Specificity to particular analytes provided by functionalization of the nanobiosensor with probe molecules, antibody or aptamer, specific to the analyte. The functionalization is conducted by employing the simplest cross-linking chemistry.

ELECTROCHEMICAL MEASURMENTS

Electrochemical measurements conducted by means of typical electrochemical methods – differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) and electrical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The typical sight of DPV and EIS measurements for bare, functionalized and attached analyte electrodes shown below.
MULTIPLEXING AND VERSATILITY

The technology possesses multiplexing abilities and current configuration allows simultaneous detection of up to nine analytes where some electrodes can be used for calibration purposes. The assay has been extensively tested for different analytes such as:

  • Ricin, Troponin I, Myoglobin, C-reactive protein, Neurotransmitters Dopamine, and Serotonin;
  • DNA;
  • Environment pathogens.

      SCALE UP MANUFACTURING

      The technology is on 4-inchs wafer stage but will be extended to 6-inchs wafers. Protocols, methods and equipment are well known in the industry and allow to manufacture sufficient volumes of the product in cost effective manner.
